Singapore's workplace fatality rate falls to new low
SINGAPORE: Singapore's workplace fatality rate has fallen to a new low of 2.2 per 100,000 workers, from 2.9 in 2009.
This was announced by Manpower Minister, Gan Kim Yong, at the bizSAFE convention on Thursday morning.
54 workers died in workplace accidents in 2010, down from 70 in the previous year.
However, Mr Gan said that each of the 54 workplace fatalities last year is a sombre reminder that there is still much that needs to be done.
"Experience tells us that workplace accidents are costly, involving man-hour losses and temporary stop-work orders that impact productivity. Only by taking steps such as risk assessments from the on-set to mitigate workplace risks can we effectively prevent accidents and save lives," said Mr Gan.

OVER 100 SAFETY WARNINGS ISSUED TO SHIPYARDS IN 2 MONTHS

Over 100 safety warnings issued to shipyards in 2 months
SINGAPORE: Shipyards in Singapore were issued more than 100 warnings in the last two months for flouting work safety rules.
Speaking at the opening of the Keppel Group Safety Convention, Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong said while the yards have systems and processes in place, there are pockets of non-compliance.
He said the inspections found non-compliance in routine shipyard work like working at height and lifting activities where fatalities are most common.
Mr Gan said the failure to ensure proper implementation on the ground or failure to adopt safety precautions such as wearing protective gear, incidents involving such work will still occur.

GATE VALVE LOCKOUT GVL-1 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Slide the two half parts to cover the Gate Valve handle, with handle in required position. Push together as far as handle size will allow. The GVL-1 is designed to fit up to maximum 160mm – minimum 50mm handle diameter size.
Insert a padlock through holes provided, as shown, to prevent opening of device. Thereafter, attach a Danger Tag.
Ensure that the device cannot be removed and that access to Gate Valve Handle is blocked efficiently. Some of these valve handle cannot be turned. If the device cannot securely block access to gate handle, it must NOT be used.
